In the heart of France: authenticity, tranquillity and beauty
Discover the very best and most authentic aspects of France — a rich historical heritage, unspoilt countryside and an incomparable way of life — by staying at Le Guet de Chouette.
Le Guet de Chouette is a charming 4-star gîte nestled in the heart of France, within the Brenne Nature Park. An exceptional region, with unspoilt, wild countryside that will delight all nature lovers
The house is situated on the heights above the village of Obterre. It enjoys absolute tranquillity and unobstructed views of the surrounding countryside.
We are less than 80 km south of Tours and the entire Loire Valley, a region rich in culture and tourism. It is known as ‘the garden of France’ and it is here that all the kings built their finest châteaux. Lovers of history, architecture, heritage, fine stonework and beautiful gardens will be enchanted. All these sites offer specially designed trails for children, with games and numerous attractions.
A historic house that has witnessed the Crusades
Pleasant and spacious, the Maison du Guet de Chouette features two bedrooms (one with a double bed, the other with twin beds), a bathroom, a fitted kitchen and a large living area serving as a combined lounge and dining room, complete with an antique fireplace and a wood-burning stove.
Le Guet de Chouette has a long history. Some parts of the house date back to the 11th century, others to the 16th. It is highly likely that it dates back to the 8th century and is one of the last remaining vestiges of an ancient stronghold.
The thickness of its walls (over a metre in places!) ensures the house stays cool even in the height of summer, and in winter you can rely on the gentle warmth provided by the wood-burning stove and the various electric convector heaters.
The house is surrounded by a garden featuring a summer dining area, sun loungers and a flower-filled meadow.
There is space to park several cars.
Although the gîte is completely private and entirely self-contained, the owner, an Englishwoman, lives nearby and is on hand to make your stay as comfortable as possible or to assist you should you need anything at all.
The gîte has a reliable internet connection and a large-screen television.

Obterre - A small village with a big personality
The name Obterre derives from ancient French, meaning ‘White (Ob) Land (terre)’. The surounding fields are almost white when ploughed.
You will find everyone very freindly and helpful. Even the bells of the church have a nice gentle tone.
You can take wonderful walks direct from your door and there is always something to admire.
Obterre has a great comunity and we have two outside events. These are great fun and highly recommended with live music and dancing.
The Soirée Moules Frites et Feu d'artifice - is held the first Saturday in July. Tickets at the entrance.
The Fête du Houblon - is held the last weekend of August. A 2-night festival of beer, food and excellent entertainment for all. It is a ticketed event, we can organise tickets for you.
Apart from those two evening events, when there is a little noise, you will find the tranquility breathtaking.

"Jaugette - Manoir des Arts" was created in 2011 in Obterre, by the renowned international pianist Irina Kataeva. Offering artistic and cultural activities and presenting both classical and contemporary works, in local venues, including their own renovated barn a short walk from the gîte. For up-to-date performance itinerary visit: https://www.jaugette.com/

Thoughout the year there are many local events and spectacles, exhibitions, fetes, markets soirées, and dances – all excellent ways of enjoying the area in company with the locals. Information available on village noticeboard and on the roadsides.
Obterre Twined with Proven, Belgium
In 1960, the industrialist Leon Schrurs discovered wild hops growing in Obterre. He decided to cultivate them. For twenty-five years, it was the third largest private hop farm in Europe. During this time, M.Chartier, then mayor of Obterre, was associated with Roger Top the Hop Master and the Fête du Houblon, (Hop Festival) was born. Some years later Roger Tops became the deputy mayor of the city of Proven, Belgium and in 1972 the twinning between the two communities began.
